About the Alberta GenWeb Project
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. Required elements of a county page included offering queries and lookups. This project became known as KyGenWeb.
Within just a few months, most of the Kentucky counties had a volunteer coordinator, and it was decided to expand the project to include the other states and the USGenWeb was born, and a short time later WorldGenWeb.
The Canada GenWeb Project began in 1997, and is modeled after the USGenWeb Project. Darlene Homme started working on the Alberta GenWeb site in August of 1997. Ane then I can on in 2004.
Since that date many of the more than seventy MD, County, and City sites are being coordinated by a growing list of volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone of the Alberta GenWeb site. As well as taking care of their sites people donate their time to do lookups for researchers, copy and send history book indexes, send lists of veterans, answer queries on those pages, aid researchers on the Alberta Mail List. The list goes on and on . . . . and I can't thank these people enough for their time and energy.
Our common goal is the collection and distribution of genealogical data on the Web.
